Wind Fence Simulation - Mesh Error

I am trying to simulate the effect of wind on a porous fence. It should be a simple project, but I am doing something wrong. Hopefully someone can assist me. The project is:

I have created a fence 100m long x 10m high and put an external flow region around it and set the boundaries as I believe are correct. I set the fence to porous media (perforated plate).

I am getting the following error:
One or more cell zones do not intersect the flow region or the intersection results in a non-solid body. Cell zones must overlap with the flow region.

Can someone give me an idea what I am doing wrong ?

Thanks in advance.
Nick

Hi @nick_marks,

Thanks for posting on the forum and welcome to the SimScale Community :handshake:

Since the porous media is an advanced concept, you shouldn’t exclude it from the flow region as would happen in a normal scenario. This is due to the fact that advanced concepts exclude parts from the model and defines a cell region where it originally was.

Since there are no cells for the special properties to be applied, the meshing operation fails.

Best,
Igor

Hi Igor,

Thank you for replying to my post. I don’t believe that I excluded the porous media from the flow region.

The process I took was:

  1. Import model of WALL 50m L x 0.1m W x 10m H
  2. Place external flow volume around it (100m L x 100m W x 50m H) with wall centered in the space except the wall sits at the bottom of external flow volume
  3. Set Geometry (it selects itself) and Materials (air)
  4. Set boundary conditions - Velocity (5m/sec) on one end, pressure (0 bar) opposite end, top and side set to wall slip and bottom set to wall non-slip
  5. Set WALL as porous media - perforated plate (Free area ratio 0.5, Direction Y = 0.1m)

Is there something obvious I am doing wrong.

Thanks again for your assistance.

@nick_marks,

Maybe my wording wasn’t the best - but what I meant to say was that the fence’s “negative” is present in the flow region. This will be done automatically when running the external flow volume operation if you don’t manually select the parts to be excluded.

If the negative is there, the advanced concept will not be applied since there are no cells in that region.
