The idea could actually be expanded to any mappable parameter.
My additional comments:
Bring point section feature to surfaces and volumes, where selecting a surface or volume, stats are graphically presented to the user much like the point selection presents. The data that would be presented is the minimum and maximum value of a field, the surface or volume average (depending upon selection) and possibly a deviation quantity.
