Model preparation for CFD

I have a very specific question. Ι I have a stator in my model which has a sphere. I want to rotate it. I’ll define it as rotating wall. Before I can this step , is it necessary to put material solid or or not necessary? I haven’t import my model in the SimScale yet. I prepare it.

Hi @vtsich, thanks for posting on the forum

I’ll answer in more detail tomorrow as I’m about to be out of office, but I’m not sure if I follow what you mean:

  • Is the stator originally a solid part?
  • Can you maybe provide the 3D schematics of both cases (solid and open)?
  • Can you detail a little bit more what is the goal with the stator?

Best,
Igor

Of course.

In the first case

In the second case

These make no difference in the sphere. I want the sphere to be considered a solid material and not a fluid. Next I’ll set it as a rotating wall

Is it necessary to I difine solid material (second case) or It is not necessary (first case) ?

Hi @vtsich,

I’m not sure I understand the difference between the first and second cases regarding the sphere you’ve mentioned. If you want to make it a specific solid material - for thermal analysis, let’s say - you shouldn’t be able to do it with the Subsonic solver, to my knowledge.

However, if you only want to apply a boundary condition to it, then you just need it to be a Solid body in your CAD and it will work

If you want me to take a closer look, please create a project and upload both CADs in it! Then just share the project’s URL

Best,
Igor

Hello again. I don’t want to do thermal analysis. I want to do subsonic CFD analysis. My problem is that I don’t know if I set the flow domain (virtual ) to import in SimScale , how will the CFturbo system define the sphere (material solid or flow domain). My model is file cft. I don’t know how to send in here.

By fluid domain you mean the flow region? If so you can export it or create it in SimScale, it’s up to you.

Regarding the file format, you’d need to export it as one of the following:

  • Native formats:
    • Parasolid (.x_t, .x_b)
    • SolidWorks (.sldprt, .sldasm)
    • Autodesk Inventor (.iam, *.ipt)
    • Rhino 4, 5, 6, and 7 (.3dm)
    • CATIA (.CATPart, .CATProduct)
    • PTC Creo (.prt, .asm)
    • Siemens NX (.prt)
    • Solid Edge (.par, .asm, .psm)
    • REVIT (.rvt)
  • Neutral formats:
    • ACIS (.sat, .sab)
    • STEP (.stp, .step)
    • IGES (.igs, .iges)
    • STL (.stl)

Ideally in STEP or Parasolid. Does CFTurbo not have the option to export your file in another format?

For more information see here.

Best,
Igor

I can export it in file STEP but this isn’t problem. Ok I’ll give it a try and let you know if I have any problem. Thanks.

Great @vtsich! Then you can import both files as STEP in a project so that we can take a closer look

Unfortunately the sphere was not considered a material or a wall

Also it has this message

Hi @vtsich, make sure your project is shared with support

I did it

I am doing a run at the moment for check

The sphere is fluid region which is problem

Hi @vtsich, I’ve just taken a look and it seems fine from a CAD perspective

The sphere is inside this cylinder, if you hide the faces:

You’ll be able to see it:

Best,
Igor

Ok. Thank you but I can’t put the sphere in rotate zone.

Yes, for that you’d have to model a rotating zone that includes the sphere,

However, if you wish to you could set it as a rotating wall

Thank you very much. I am going to try it tomorrow :grinning:

Hello again. I have a old API . Can I make a new API ?
