I’m new to SimScale and fluid flow simulation. I designed a box in CAD. It has 3 chambers. There are two panels that define the chambers. Each panel has an opening in the bottom. The opening at the bottom of the panel on the inlet side (the blue panel) has a larger opening than the opening at the bottom of the panel on the outlet side (the red panel).
I would like to test fluid flow to make sure water will not overflow the tank. I’d also like to be able to modify the size of the openings at the bottom of each panel to see how that affects fluid flow.
I tried to create simulations, but I keep getting all sorts of errors. The current error says:
> A setup with at least 5 regions is being used in a single-region analysis type. Please delete CAD regions that are irrelevant for the simulation. If all CAD regions are relevant, ensure that only one region is assigned to the material and that all other bodies are assigned to advanced concepts.
I did watch some tutorial videos on YouTube, but there’s something I’m missing and don’t understand. I’ve been at this for hours, and I can’t figure out how to correctly define the inlet, the outlet, and the path of the fluid flow. Can anyone give me some advice please? This is a link to my public model/simulation.
Perhaps, the following information will be helpful.
The simulation domain for a fluid dynamics simulation is the region occupied by the fluid (gas or liquid). Generally, the CAD model does not specify this fluid region. The user should manually specify or extract the fluid region in a process known as the “Flow Volume Extraction”.
Perhaps, then, the issue is that there is more than one flow volume in your CAD model. In the top right corner of your project, click the tab under “Geometry”. There are five bodies/volumes. However, for non-Conjugate Heat Transfer simulations, multiple bodies are not allowed, unless the additional bodies will be used as advanced concepts. (Note: users define advanced concepts to model advanced flow characteristics such as rotating zones, power sources, and porous medium, which would otherwise require sophisticated geometries or large meshes.) This documentation page directly explains the reason for the error and the workaround: Error: Multi-Region Mesh in Non-CHT Simulation | SimScale
I had no idea about the “Flow Volume Extraction” process.
I will review both of the documentation links you provided and learn more about the “Flow Volume Extraction” process. I will follow-up and post on my progress (or lack thereof).
