This project was aimed at simulating the external velocity field around a golf ball. An interesting flow field is seen in comparison with spherical balls used in any other game/sport due to the presence of dimples. A golf ball with dimples can travel almost twice as far as a smooth golf ball. The dimples minimize drag forces that pull back on the ball or slow it down. It also help lift the ball by forcing airflow downward, which pushes the ball upward (principles similar to the aerodynamics of an aircraft). The golf ball may experience a spin during its travel. Hence it could be assumed an external flow, with a spin imparted to the ball. This could be used to analyse the flow field around the ball.
