Pedestrian Wind Comfort Analysis for assessing the wind speeds in areas meant for recreational use.

The purpose of this project is to use experimental results from the Architectural Institute of Japan to validate CFD results gained from SimScale. The case being validated is Case E, which consists a complex of buildings with simplified geometry. Many scenarios are presented in Case E, The scenarios used to validate the SimScale platform were the North, East, South and Westerly winds for the after construction scenario.

The SimScale CFD results were compared to the experimental results and found to have good correlation. Some underprediction was seen in the k-epsilon models in the strong wind regions and underprediction in the wake regions, but is a known trait of the K-epsilon model and is acceptable and should be considered when evaluating results.

This project conducts wind-loading and wind-comfort studies in a residential complex. It uses SimScale's Lattice-Boltzmann solver for a transient incompressible analysis. 

This study serves two purposes:

1. Calculation of transient wind-loads on a tall structure in the complex
2. Study of wind flow patterns at pedestrian height

This validation focuses on validating the moment coefficients using experimental results obtained by RWDI in their wind tunnel tests, published in the paper (Calin Dragoiescu, Jason Garber and Suresh Kumar, 2006) where results were published using two techniques, a high-frequency force balance (HFFB) and high-frequency pressure integration (HFPI) which uses tap points. Both showing mostly good agreement between the two, with HFFB expected to be more accurate.
