  • My Life at SimScale: David Short, Application Engineer

BlogLife At SimScaleMy Life at SimScale: David Short, Application Engineer

Here at SimScale, we have over 30 nationalities with over 40 different languages spoken! In this spotlight article, we would like to introduce you to one of our Application Engineers, David Short, who is excited to share what his day at SimScale looks like!

    Name: David Short
    From: UK
    Position: Application Engineer
    Time at SimScale: 1+ years

    What did you study?

“I studied Marine Technology at Trondheim in Norway. It’s an amazing research center with loads of fun things going on. I did my bachelor’s degree in naval architecture at Newcastle University, but I wanted to get more into offshore renewables. A really awesome lecturer told me about Trondheim, and I went for it. There was a really big focus on CFD and OpenFOAM, so I became familiar with that kind of technology.”

Why did you come to Munich?

“Well, I met a girl and moved to Munich which is, of course, landlocked, so I had to switch things up! I got a job at a software company, Autodesk, which is where I met Jon (SimScale’s VP Customer Success). He’s the one that introduced me to SimScale.”

What do you do here at SimScale?

“As an Application Engineer, I started off doing both pre- and post-sales. Since January, I’ve concentrated on purely pre-sales. In pre-sales, I get to show off SimScale, prove we’re the best fit for potential users, support new customers, and provide guidance for different applications. In this role, it’s important that I understand the opportunities within the industry, and make sure prospects can see the value in simulation for their business.”

What does your average day as an Application Engineer look like?

“On an average day, from the early morning until 2 pm (when I pick up my son from ‘Kinderkrippe’), I am always on the go. From internal and external meetings to customer demonstrations and simulations, it’s never a dull day at SimScale. We’ve got a crazy number of opportunities coming in right now as well, so it’s very busy.”

What is your favorite thing about the day?

“Definitely chatting with the team. We’re always geeking out over exciting simulations.”

“Long, with a Butterbreze (buttered pretzel)!”

What is your favorite current project?

    “Solar panel wind loading!”
